BELLINGHAM – The town of Lynden has become synonymous with high school football success with a long history of football state champions. And now it’s time for a new chapter in the Lynden high school football history books with the inaugural season of its girl’s flag football and they have one goal in mind…

Add their names to the list of state champions.

They charged one step closer on Wednesday night as they defeated both the Ferndale Golden Eagles and Squalicum Storm at Squalicum High School.

They first faced the Golden Eagles and didn’t waste any time, scoring on their first drive. Senior Kyleigh McVie connected with senior Blaine Holman to take an early 7-0 lead and it was off to the races from there. McVie found senior Campbell DeJong on the Lion’s next drive and DeJong followed the touchdown up by intercepting a Ferndale pass on defense.

McVie ticked off two more touchdowns before the half. The first went to junior Brooklynne Bourgault and the second went to junior Sarah McVie.

Lynden didn’t waste anytime coming out of the half as Holman grabbed a Ferndale pass attempt and carried the ball to the house to put the Lions up 35-0.

Ferndale found the endzone when sophomore Sarah Stoner connected with junior Morgan Schagt.

Kyleigh McVie grabbed her last touchdown of the game, throwing the ball to junior Mariah VanderMey before handing VanderMay the reins of the offense.

Ferndale scored once more on a touchdown by junior Audrey Kallin, followed by an interception when sophomore Tehgan Ambrose grabbed a Lynden pass.

The Lions, however, had done enough to secure the 42-14 win, but they weren’t done with the evening just yet.

The second of their two back-to-back games was against the Storm, who gave Lynden a little more trouble.

It took longer than in the Ferndale game but the Lions still struck first as Kyleigh McVie found Sarah McVie to get the scoring started.

Squalicum freshman Luccia Steinkamp intercepted Lynden on its next offensive drive but DeJong quickly returned the favor, giving the ball back to her offense.

Kyleigh McVie connected with Bourgault for the 14-0 lead. VanderMey picked up the fourth of five Lynden interceptions between the two games, setting up the McVie-to-McVie connection for one last touchdown.

That touchdown made the score 21-0 which would be the final score but not before Lion sophomore Jazzy Terpstra picked off a Squalicum pass attempt.

The two victories pushed Lynden to 8-0 on the season and leave the team undefeated in it’s young history.
