Lummi Nation Fights Off Irish – Advance to Championship Game

SPOKANE – The Blackhawks shook off a rough start and finished strong in the semifinal round of the 1B state tournament as they defeated DeSales 74-58 to advance to the state championship game.

The Fighting Irish were up 16-10 after one quarter, but Lummi Nation got hot for the rest of the game, and by the time the final buzzer went off it had made 53.6% of its field goals. The Blackhawks were especially exceptional from behind the three-point line where they made seven of their 15 attempts.

Junior guard Dyson Edwards led Lummi Nation with 21 points on 9-of-19 shooting, and his backcourt mate Jerome Toby scored 20 points to go along with his six assists and two steals.

Senior center Chayce Waite-Kellar locked down the middle as he finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. He was aided in the paint by junior forward Deandre James who added seven points and seven boards.

Junior sharpshooter Landon LaFontiaine dropped a pair of three-balls and finished with 10 points.

The Blackhawks will go for their second straight state championship in a row tomorrow at 7:00, and wouldn’t you know it, they will be facing their biggest rival, Tulalip Heritage. It will be the fifth meeting between these two schools this season. Lummi Nation has won all four of the previous matchups.
