Lions Blank Cougars

ARLINGTON – Although wounded, the Lynden football team marched right into Dick Cardinal Stadium on Friday night, and took down Lakewood 55-0.

The Lions possessed the ball seven times in the first half and scored seven touchdowns, with the first being a six-yard run by junior quarterback Lukas Lalji.

Junior running back Dawson VanDalen then scored from four yards out, and that was followed up by a pair of touchdown passes from Lalji. The first was a quick shovel pass to sophomore Markus Koenen who covered eight yards before getting to the endzone. The second was a 37-yard pass down the left sideline to junior wide receiver Gordy Bedlington.

It was 28-0 after one quarter of play.

VanDalen finished his day with a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. He sat the rest of the game, already with 114 rushing yards.

Lynden then put senior Alvaro Mendoza-Batey in at running back. The starting defensive lineman hadn’t carried the ball since last season, where he totaled just 13 attempts. He proceeded to tote the ball six times for 79 yards on the following drive, including a 27-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Postma scored the final two touchdowns of the game for the Lions.

Mendoza-Batey also led the defense with a pair of tackles for loss, while Lynden also got interceptions from seniors Brody Price and Antonio Simanu, as well as junior Lincoln Van Ry and sophomore Zane Schatte.

The Lions (6-2) will host Burlington-Edison (5-3) on Friday night at 7:00.
