RENTON – The youthful Borderites traded touchdowns with the athletic Red Hawks through the first quarter and a half, but Renton then ripped off five straight touchdowns before defeating Blaine 55-21 at Renton Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks scored on their first possession, and was quickly set up to score again when they recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. The Borderite defense kept them out of the endzone, and an interception by sophomore linebacker Tandy Heer helped set up a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Connor Brown.
Renton answered with another touchdown run, and Blaine came right back with a 14-yard touchdown strike from Brown to 6-foot-3 junior wide receiver Peyton Bouma.
The game was pretty even up to this point, but turnovers started to haunt the Borderites from here on out as the Red Hawks went on their run.
Brown and Bouma hooked up once again for the final touchdown of the game, and Brown finished with 214 yards in his first varsity start.
Bouma caught seven passes for 101 yards, and senior wide receiver added eight receptions for 100 yards. It was the first time in three years that two Borderites had at least 100 yards receiving in the same game.
Kerwin also led with 6.5 tackles, a forced fumble, a pass defended and another 102 yards totaled in kickoff returns.
The Borderites (0-1) will be on the road again on Saturday when they take on Pe Ell/Willapa Valley at 1:00.
