Turrell

Instead of musical chairs, it was more like musical quarters as the Mariners claimed the first quarter, and the Cougars captured the second quarter. A closer third quarter was still obtained by Sehome, but instead of Lakewood taking the final quarter, it was all Mariners who ripped off 20 points in the final period to grab the 2A district tournament victory.

Sophomore guard Taylor Turrell buried 4-of-7 from the three-point land, and she finished with a team-high 16 points to lead Sehome. She also finished with five rebounds and three assists.

Junior forward Kate Schroeder scored 12 points, and senior center Aspen Barge added eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Sehome will move on to the semifinals to take on top-ranked Lynden at 7:00 on Saturday at Mount Vernon High School.

It was evenly played first half with the game knotted up at 26-26 at the midway break, but a strong third quarter surge by the Storm separated them from the Tigers and they picked up the important win.

Junior point guard Lexi Robbins connected on 8-of-13 from the field for 18 points while directing the offense.

Junior forward Tiana Thompson scored 13 points, and went 4-for-6 from the foul line, while juniors Addison Kettman and Colee Harper each scored nine points.

Freshman center Avery Kettman collected a team-high six rebounds for Squalicum which will next face Archbishop Murphy at 5:00 on Saturday at Mount Vernon High School for a state playoff berth, and a spot in the district championship game.

  • Ferndale 46, Everett 45

Washington

In an elimination game, the Golden Eagles entered the fourth quarter down 38-26. This is also against a team that had beaten them 40-20 earlier in the season. On the road, it didn’t look good for Ferndale. However, this is when big-time players step up and create lifelong memories, and that’s exactly what senior guard Kayla Washington did.

She put the entire team on her back, and went on to outscore the entire Seagull team 13-7 over the vast majority of the fourth quarter, but Ferndale was still down by two points with five seconds left in the game, and possibly the season. Washington received a pass from sophomore forward Ari Gilday and launched up a shot at least eight feet behind the three-point line on the right elbow and canned it home right as the buzzer sounded.

The shot eliminated Everett, it moved Ferndale into the next round of the 3A district tournament, and it created a lifelong memory for Washington, her teammates, coaches and everyone in attendance.

She finished with a game-high 23 points, and Gilday added 16 points.

Senior forward Abbey White and junior forward Kayla Lee each scored six points apiece.

The Golden Eagles will be at Edmonds-Woodway High School on Saturday to take on the Warriors at 7:00.
