Elston

The two Whatcom County squads played relatively even for the final three quarters, but a 14-5 advantage for the Storm after the first quarter gave Squalicum the edge for the rest of the way.

Junior guard Blake Elston torched the next on 10-of-13 shooting for a game-high 23 points to lead the Storm offensively.

The Blackhawks found themselves behind after each of the first three quarters, but the defending 1B state champions made the most of the fourth quarter.

LaFontaine

It begin with them being down 40-31, but they gradually clawed back into the game. With less than a minute remaining, senior guard Jerome Toby connected on a layup which brought Lummi Nation within two points.

Moments later, a steal and a coast-to-coast drive from Toby tied the game as the clock continued to count down, now with just over 30 seconds left. After the Bulldogs inbounded the ball, and got past mid-court, a timeout was called with 29.6 seconds left in the game, which was tied at 48-48.

Coming out of the timeout, Mount Vernon elected to go for a quick shot, but it came up short and it was quickly grabbed by Toby, who then dribbled to ball slowly up the court, as he waited for his coach (and dad) to call a timeout. He did with 13.8 seconds left.

The ball was then inbounded to Toby, who gave it up at the top of the key to junior guard Dyson Edwards. Edwards patiently waited as fellow junior Landon LaFontaine ran down the baseline, from right to left, and spotted up for a shot. He received the ball from Edwards and hit the open jumper from just beyond the arc with 0.9 seconds left.

The desperation Bulldog shot at the end came up short.

Toby finished with a team-high 16 points and six steals, and senior center Chayce Waite-Kellar added 10 points and 16 rebounds.

  • Lakewood 67, Ferndale 51

The Cougars forced 16 turnovers, and turned the ball over just seven times, and that proved to be the difference as they picked up the road win against the Golden Eagles.

Despite fighting early foul trouble, Ferndale senior forward Mantaj Singh led his team with 18 points.

Sophomore guard Tracen Pazaski added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Blake Singson and sophomore guard Houston Wills each buried a pair of three-pointers.

  • Anacortes 48, Sehome 33

Kelley

The Mariners began the game with a 4-0 lead, but the Seahawks scored the next 10 points of the game.

Sehome’s defense then allowed just four points in the second quarter, and when junior guard Quincy Tanovan hit a layup early in the third quarter it tied the game at 16-16.

However, the Mariners struggled to shoot the three-ball all night, and finished by connecting on just two of 27 from beyond the arc. Despite the shooting woes, Sehome managed to keep the game within a single-digit deficit, but Anacortes finished on a 14-5 run to take the home win.

Senior forward Xavier Kelley led the Mariners with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Senior guard Nolan Wright added six assists and five rebounds, and senior center Cole Turrell scored eight points.
