Wright

The Mariners found a groove early and raced out to a 20-13 lead in the first quarter with Nolan Wright leading the charge. Wright accounted for 13 of Sehome’s first quarter points and had a team-high 20 points on the night.

The senior point guard also accounted for a game-high 10 assists.

Bellingham, however, began to claw back. They outscored the Mariners in the second quarter and were one point shy of matching Sehome’s third quarter points. Then, with less than five minutes to go in the game, Bayhawk junior guard Calvin VanHofwegen knocked down a three pointer and suddenly, the game was tied. It was his game-high seventh deep ball of the evening.

VanHofwegen

The Mariners still had the momentum though, and the clock was dwindling fast on the Bayhawks, who were forced to keep sending Sehome to the free throw line and hope for the best. But the Mariners kept hitting their shots, forcing mistakes with their defense, and ran away with the home win.

Alongside Wright, senior Xavier Kelley scored 13 points and Cole Turrell scored 10 points for Sehome on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

On the Bayhawks side, Van Hofwegen accounted for 25 points and senior forward Joe Harward added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

The Mountaineers led 22-16 with 6:20 left in the second quarter, which prompted a Cougar timeout. Lakewood then went on a 20-0 run and led 41-27 at the half.

Mount Baker then found themselves down 48-30 early in the third quarter, but quickly went on an 18-2 run of its own to bring the game within two points, but the Cougars hit three-pointers in key moments down the stretch, as well as their foul shots, as the Mountaineers couldn’t close the deal on the upset win.
