It was a wild scene at Bellingham High School on Friday night as the Bayhawks found themselves down 63-57 with 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter after Trojan junior guard Pierce Brzozowski buried a pair of free throws.

McGerr

The lead was quickly cut to four points when Bellingham senior center Barrett Johnson converted on a reverse layup with 28 seconds left. A quick foul on the inbound sent Meridian to the foul line where 1-of-2 was made. The Bayhawks quickly countered with a three-pointer from junior guard Calvin VanHofwegen, and after a timeout was called, Bellingham was now down 64-62 with 14 seconds left.

A quick foul send the Trojans to the line, where again 1-0f-2 were made, and a foul on the other side sent the Bayhawks to the line where 1-of-2 was made.

Meridian called a timeout with nine seconds left in regulation, and ahead 65-63 with possession. Bellingham fouled in less than a second, and the Trojans once again went 1-of-2 from the line, which set up the Bayhawks’ final possession in regulation down 66-63.

A screen was set to try and get VanHofwegen open for the game-tying shot, but Meridian’s defense swarmed him quickly. VanHofwegen gave up the ball to senior forward Joe Harward who received it, stepped back behind the 3-point line, and put up just his 14th deep-ball attempt of the season. It hit nothing but net as the time expired, which sent the game into overtime. It was Harward’s second made three-pointer this season.

Bellingham rode the momentum in the overtime period, and outscored the Trojans 14-10 to take the win.

Brzozowski

Johnson led the Bayhawks with a career-high 20 points, which included going 8-of-12 from the foul line.

The Storm snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating the 3A Wildcats on the road to finish of the regular season.
