Wichers

Over the past few seasons, this has always been an amazingly close game when these two teams battle it out. And, in the semifinal round of the 1A district tournament, it was again as the Pioneers were able to hold off the Trojans late to secure the win.

Nooksack Valley outscored Meridian 22-12 in the second quarter, and was able to hold on to the tight lead throughout the second half.

A big reason why was because of the shot-making ability of Pioneer senior guard Owen Wichers. He made 10-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line as he ended his night with a game-high 26 points. He also finished with six rebounds and a pair of steals.

Brzozowski

Senior guard Jayden Anderson added 10 points a team-high five assists, while seniors Cole Coppinger and Crew Bauman each scored nine points. Coppinger also had a team-high four steals.

The Trojans were led by “do-everything” guard Pierce Brzozowski who racked up a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He also grabbed five steals and blocked two shots as he led his team in all five categories.

The Pioneers will take on top-seeded Lynden Christian at 7:15 on Tuesday at Lynden High School in the district championship game, and the Trojans will try to keep their season alive on Friday at Lynden High School when they take on Blaine at 7:15.

The Borderites played incredibly inspired, but just couldn’t collect the upset on the road against the Lyncs in the semifinal round of the 1A district tournament.

Adams

In a rematch from last season’s 2A district championship game, the Lions were able to flip the script by defeating the Cougars in this semifinal matchup.

Both teams arrived at “The Cathedral”, that is the Mount Vernon High School gymnasium, ready to play, but the offenses were either left on the bus or in the locker rooms as the two teams combined for nine points in the first quarter.

It was up and down action in the second quarter, though, and Lynden was able to secure a 27-16 lead at the half.

Lakewood scored more than half of its points in the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done, mostly by senior forward Spencer Adams who finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Senior center Ty Jorgenson added 18 points and five boards, and sophomore guard Jayden Navarre added seven points. Although he didn’t register in the scoring column, junior guard Gordy Bedlington was able to contribute in a big way with seven assists and three steals.

With the win, Lynden secured a spot at the state tournament, and will take on Anacortes at 7:30 on Thursday at Mount Vernon High School for the district championship.

  • Squalicum 54, Archbishop Murphy 50 (OT)

Facing elimination in the 2A district tournament, the Storm scored just four points in the first quarter, and were down by double-digits all the way into the fourth quarter. However, when junior guard Blake Elston hit a three-pointer from the right elbow with 2:20 left in regulation, it brough Squalicum with two points, 40-38.

Elston

After getting a defensive stop, the smallest player on the court was fouled on the following possession, and 5-foot-7 Storm freshman Cody Le was sent to the foul line with a chance to tie the game.

With 1:44 left, he did just that by making both foul shots.

Timeouts and empty possessions by both teams then took place, and out of nowhere, senior forward Ansen Asbjornsen stole the ball and finished at the other end with a layup, but the referees declared that another Squalicum player had interfered at the rim and the basket wasn’t counted.

Still tied, with 27 seconds left, the Wildcats took possession and were able to score with 12 seconds left to take a 42-40 lead. The Storm quickly inbounded the ball to Elston who raced up the court, and scored with 4.2 seconds left to tie the game up. Archbishop Murphy was able to get up one last shot, but it fell short, and Squalicum was facing its second overtime in as many games in this tournament.

A three-pointer by junior guard Hunter Calloway gave the Storm their first lead of the game, and that was when Orion Granberg-Kiddle went to work down low. Turnaround jumpers and offensive putbacks by the 6-foot-5 junior center pushed Squalicum’s lead out even further, but the Wildcats ended up tying the game back up with one minute to go in overtime.

A Calloway bucket, and a fast-break score by Asbjornsen put the Strom quickly up by four, and with 15 seconds left, Archbishop Murphy was unable to recover.

Elston finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, and Granberg-Kiddle also had a double-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

Calloway ended with 13 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Squalicum will now play at 5:30 on Monday against Lakewood at Mount Vernon High School in a loser-out contest.
