The Pioneers kicked off the 1A bi-district tournament with a convincing win over the Wildcats as freshman Alayna VanIeperen singled, doubled and homered to lead the Nooksack Valley offense. The Pioneers also received a homerun from Alayna Dykstra, her eighth of the season, while Kenzie Likkel tripled and drove in three runs and Shelby Mason scored four runs and stole three bases.

It was all Mountaineers in the opening round of the 1A bi-district tournament as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Senior catcher Gracie Zender went 4-for-4 with a double and five runs driven in to power the offense, and senior shortstop Annalee Cohn was 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, and scored four runs. Sophomore pitcher Kara Welters allowed just five hits and struck out three in the shortened five-inning contest.

With the #3 seed, the Lyncs received a first-round by and went straight into the quarterfinals. And with the win, they went straight to the semifinals of the 1A bi-district tournament. Lynden Christian pounded seven extra base hits, including a pair of homeruns from Kassidy VanSoest and another homerun from Roxanne Lenning. VanSoest drove in five runs, while Lenning and Hannah Terpstra each drove in three runs as the Lyncs scored all 13 of their runs over the first three innings. VanSoest also picked up the complete game victory while striking out nine batters, and Lynden Christian is set to face Montesano today at noon.

After the earlier win, the Pioneers took on the top-seeded Warriors, and they found out in the third inning why they earned the top seed. Rochester batted around and scored eight runs in the third inning, and the Warrior pitcher allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters. Nooksack Valley’s hits came from Alayna Dykstra who hit a double, and Payton Bartl who had a single.

Seton Catholic 11, Mount Baker 1
The Mountaineers trailed 1-0 through the first three innings, and a homerun by Kara Welters tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Cougars scored 10 runs over the next two innings to grab the win. In addition to Welters’ homerun, Mount Baker also got two hits from Kennedy Rathjen and one from Cadence Cloninger. The loss sent the Mountaineers into the consolation bracket where they played against Elma, but the game was suspended going into the final inning due to darkness. Mount Baker will bat in the top of the seventh inning today at 10:00, and are currently down 15-10.

Nooksack Valley 16, Columbia (White Salmon) 9
In the Pioneers’ third game of the day, they outslugged the Bruins to keep their season alive. Alayna Dykstra hit her second homerun of the tournament and drove in four runs and scored four runs. Alayna VanIeperen, Shelby Mason and Payton Bartl each drove in three runs, and Bartl also scored three runs. Columbia cut the lead to three runs in the top of the sixth, but Nooksack Valley answered with five more runs in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers will await the finish of the Mount Baker/Elma game this morning and take on the winner today at noon in a loser-out contest.

The Wildcats put the pressure on early as they scored 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and the Storm were unable to recover. Keisha McCloud singled and tripled while Blakely Miller singled and doubled, but it wouldn’t be enough offense in the quarterfinals of the 2A district tournament.

Burlington-Edison 22, Sehome 3
The powerful Tiger offense scored in every inning, and was able to move into the semifinals of the 2A district tournament. Sarah Kruzich drove in two of the three Mariner runs, and Jacinta Lewis doubled to lead the Sehome offense. Runs were scored by Lewis, Jordan Walker and Rebekah Peterson, and Kruzich struck out five batters over three innings.

Lynden 10, Anacortes 0
With the top seed, the Lions gained a bye into the semifinals where they faced the Seahawks, who had just defeated Lakewood. Lynden sophomore pitcher Callie Ramerman eliminated any heat that were still in those Anacortes bats from the previous win as she struck out 15 batters over six innings and allowed just three hits to pick up her 14th win of the season. The Lions were also aggressive on the basepaths and stole 12 bases, with Melanie Anderson leading the way with four. Anderson also had a single, a double and scored two runs. With the win, the Lynden will play for the 2A district championship tomorrow at 6:00 against Burlington-Edison at Bender Fields.

A late push by the Storm came up just short as the Mariners were able to keep their season alive by defeating Squalicum in the consolation round of the 2A district tournament. Jacinta Lewis hit her second double of the tournament and drove in three runs to lead the Sehome offense, which also got three hits from Rebekah Peterson, including a double. Leadoff hitter Radler Rosellison scored three runs for the Mariners, and Sarah Kruzich struck out five batters on her way to the complete game victory. The Storm got a pair of runs from Gabi Gearhart and Keisha McCloud, as well as a triple from Emeryst Evans, but the season came to a close for Squalicum. Sehome will now face Anacortes at 4:00 tomorrow at Bender Fields in a loser-out contest.
