The Borderites started out strong in the first round matchup of the 1A district tournament and erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Trojans came with a big inning of their own in the top of the second. A ground-rule double off the bat of Gretchen Zandstra was followed up two batters later by an Addy TenKley grand slam. A 2-run single by Meridian senior Sydney TenKley later in the inning tied the game up at 7-7. Blaine was able to push another run across in the bottom of the inning when Dilyn Nowakowski singled home Brie Smith. Freshman shortstop Courtney Roff led Blaine with three hits and three runs batted in, and senior pitcher Shaylie Daniels allowed just two hits and struck out four in over five innings of relief work. Nooksack Valley 5, Blaine 2
Twenty minutes after defeating the Trojans, the Borderites turned around and battled the Pioneers in another loser-out game. Despite playing their best defensive game of the year, Blaine dropped the contest to Nooksack Valley who will now join Lynden Christian and Mount Baker at Fort Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday to compete in a 12-team tournament against district four. Five teams from that tournament will move on to the state tournament in Richland. The Pioneers scored the first five runs of the game over the first two innings, with Alayna Dykstra and Alayna VanIeperen each driving in a pair of runs. The Borderites did all their damage in the top of the third when Jovi Colacurcio led off with a bunt single, and was then driven home on a double off the bat of Kate Koreski, who was able to advance to third base on the throw home. Courtney Roff then singled to right field, which scored Koreski, but Nooksack Valley was able to stop the bleeding after that. VanIeperen entered the game at pitcher in the fourth inning and allowed just one hit the rest of the way to pick up the elongated save. Blaine’s season came to a close with the loss.
